A Heart After Thee, O My Father!
A heart after Thee, O my Father!
This petition I ask of Thee
That every fiber of my being
Be of one mind in unity,
Striving for the cause of the gospel
With my eyes ever on the cross
Let me forsake all the worldly things
That in eternity are dross
A heart after Thee, O my Father!
That ever yearns to love and fill,
Not the whole, perfect, and unbroken—
But the sick, tormented, and ill,
A heart that sees and pities poor lost souls,
Even when they curse and despise
A heart that cries, “Father, forgive them!”
While yet the blood is in their eyes.
A heart after Thee, O my Father!
Slow to anger, and swift to bless
Where mercy is shown long enduring
And pardon over bitterness,
And when forced by man to go a mile
To cheerfully go not one but twain,
Where self, the kernel of corn dieth
That it may bring forth fruitful grain.
A heart after Thee, O my Father!
May Thou my soul’s contentment be
Where Thy will calls Thy grace will suffice
In my weakness Thou canst use me
I only need trust Thee as a small child
And bring before Thee my needs and woes
And I know Thou wilt ne’er forsake me
Wither I am Thy presence goes.
